Music Production & Engineering (MP&E) is one of the fastest growing fields today with applications in almost every aspect of society. Film and theater, central Indian institutions, require music specialists for almost every step of production; and virtually every Indian company has acoustic needs – to establish a brand tune, for advertising, as background music for corporate events, to play in foyers, etc. – that only professionals in the music field can fulfill.
What does it mean to be a music production engineer?
We all know what it means to be an engineer: scientific talent, math skills, technology trends and you’re on your way! But these days, engineering is just a student stamp to put on your resume, a stepping stone to further and higher ambition.
Using engineering principles and applying the “engineering spirit”, MP&E is the field that combines science and creativity. People involved in MP&E use aesthetics, creativity and technical knowledge to create a music production. In short, music production engineers are involved in every step that leads to the creation of a music recording. MP&E is interdisciplinary, utilizing engineering and production techniques to adapt to the rapidly changing technologies and evolving trends of the music industry.
So is it for me?
Can you discern harmonies and instruments while listening to a music track? Can you imagine different instruments coming together to make music? Do you just love music and have a knack for science at the same time? Then MP&E might just be the thing for you! However, beware of a common misconception: simply loving music, listening to music is different from “knowing” music. Most universities abroad recommend at least two years of intensive music study, including a solid theoretical background, before taking a music production course. Classical music (Western, Carnatic or Hindustani) has a strong focus on music formation and composition, a prerequisite for sound composition, so being a student of any of these forms of music is a must.
How can I prepare for MP&E?
However, there is more to this area than just being a virtuoso instrumentalist or singer! As a high school student, there are many things you can do to prepare for a career in the music industry. Internship at local recording studios in your area if you’re interested in seeing real technology at work. Try engaging in band and ensemble play to learn the basics of teamwork in a musical setting. Try to record and track music using freeware available online from trusted publishers like Sony and Audacity. It’s all about showing initiative because no class can teach you more than you can learn through trial and error. Did you know that YouTube is one of the largest platforms for amateur musicians in the world? Embrace the musical side of social networking!
Where can I study MP&E?
MP&E has an enormous reach both abroad and in India. However, the educational institutions and programs offered vary greatly due to the demand for courses. One thing is certain: there is never a shortage of opportunities!
MP&E studies in India
Bachelors Degree: As there are few colleges specializing in music in India, one option would be to pursue a B.Tech in Acoustics/Sound Engineering with a dual major in Management Studies. Indian colleges offering such bachelor degrees include several major institutes – IIT, NIT and BITS Pilani. The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune also offers courses in audio engineering. With this training, you can either start your career directly with internships or continue your education with an M.Tech in Acoustic Engineering or an MBA.
Diploma courses: After completing your B.Technical studies, you are well advised to expand your knowledge and education by attending diploma or certificate courses in specific areas in order to start your career. Several specialized small colleges such as Sound Engineering Academy (SEA), Kerala, Audiophile Institute of Sound Engineering, Kerala, Muzik Lounge School of Audio Technology, Chennai, and School of Audio Engineering (SAE) Institute, Mumbai offer diplomas and certificate programs specializing in studio work. This is a supplement to your bachelor’s degree. You can take courses in a variety of areas, including:
• Diploma in Audio Engineering and Recording: This is generally a one-year (two semesters) full-time course.
• Sound Recording Certificate: 6-month course
• Certificate in Live Sound: 3-month course
• Certificate in Pro-Recording: 2 months
Study MP&E Abroad
Bachelor’s degrees: MP&E is often offered abroad as a separate four or five-year course at the bachelor’s level. A formal education in physics and mathematics is required. Scholarships are often awarded to those who demonstrate either vocal or instrumental ability and also demonstrate a clear interest in and knack for music. The great thing about MP&E and Acoustic Engineering is that it is a viable option at several reputable universities. For example, Indiana University, Texas State University and Johns Hopkins University offer very interesting undergraduate programs in MP&E.
Diploma Courses: There are also small private schools in the US that offer diploma and certificate courses in MP&E that can be taken in a short time after your bachelor’s degree, similar to the diplomas available in India. Here are some specialized music production and engineering colleges:
• SAE Institute: SAE Institute is one of the largest audio engineering universities in the world with campuses in 23 countries (including India – in Mumbai, as mentioned). Full-time study lasts nine months, part-time study twice as long. Scholarships are also possible.
• Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences: Located in Tempe, Arizona (USA), this college has only 12 students per class, which enhances the overall learning experience. The program lasts 42 weeks and scholarships are also available.
• McNally Smith College of Music: Looking for a college with many options, respected staff and a larger student body? This college in Minnesota, USA could be the right choice.
• Institute of Production and Recording: This institute, another Minnesota college, offers rigorous coursework and classes to efficiently train you for immediate employment after earning a bachelor’s degree in audio engineering.
Remember that MP&E is one of these hands-on courses. It requires constant interaction with musicians, producers and engineers.
