A Beginner’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence

September 20, 2022

AI is a machine-related branch of computer science. In the second half of the 20th century, AI was considered to be any work done by machines that did not require the intelligence of a human to complete a specific task. This definition has been credited to the fathers of artificial intelligence named Minsky and McCarthy. The current definition is the ability of robots, controlled by a computer, to solve problems that require human intellect and skills, such as the ability to reason, generalize, and ascertain data.

AI can be divided into two categories: narrow AI and general AI. Narrow AI is often seen as weak. It is specifically task-oriented. General AI is considered strong. Unlike Narrow AI, it can handle a variety of tasks.

Narrow AI

This shows in the computers we use. This kind of AI generally focuses on a single task that it is very good at. Examples include virtual assistants that recognize voice and speech, and cars that can drive themselves. This type of artificial intelligence can only perform a specific task that they are taught, but no more. Answering customer questions and concerns is a common form of narrow artificial intelligence, along with collaborating with other artificial intelligence for the tasks of hotel booking, assisting radiologists in X-ray searching for tumors that have the potential to become dangerous , detecting problems with elevators, creating a three-dimensional model of the world, etc. Unlike humans, it can only perform tasks that are taught to it, and this is one of its biggest disadvantages.

General AI

This type of AI can be found in more sophisticated systems. It can do multiple tasks that a human can do and use human-like intelligence to solve various problems, ranging from a simple task like clipping nails and hair and watering plants, to a challenging task like arguing based on collected data. The themes of Western films are heavily influenced by general AI. The data scientists argue that general artificial intelligence will increase enormously by the year 2040-2050 and by the year 2075 would be the future of this universe and dominate the whole world including humans. It would also be a threat to the human species. General AI is believed to outperform cognitive human performance in virtual realms. However, many scientists are divided on this. Many scientists believe so general AI is far from the future of the world. This view is shared by the pioneers of general artificial intelligence such as Demis Hassabis, Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun. They believe there is no concrete basis for fearing that the human species will be threatened by general artificial intelligence in the near future.
